چکیده

We model the spectral energy distribution of the type 1 Seyfert galaxy NGC 5548, fitting data from simultaneous optical, UV, and X-ray monitoring observations. We assume a geometry consisting of a hot central Comptonizing region surrounded by a thin accretion disk. The properties of the disk and the hot central region are determined by the feedback occurring between the hot Comptonizing region and thermal reprocessing in the disk that, along with viscous dissipation, provides the seed photons for the Comptonization process. The constraints imposed upon this model by the multiwavelength data allow us to derive limits on the central black hole mass, M . 2×107 M⊙, the accretion rate, Ṁ . 2.5×105 M⊙yr −1/M, and the radius of the transition region between the thin outer disk and the geometrically thick, hot inner region, ∼ 2–5×1014 cm. Type 2 Counterparts of Narrow - Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies

Unified models of Seyfert galaxies, based on viewing angles, successfully explain the observed differences between type 1 and 2 Seyferts. The existence of a range in accretion rates (ṁ ∼ 0.001− 1) relative to the Eddington rate (from broad-line Seyfert 1s to narrow-line Seyfert 1s or NLS1s) and the unification of Seyfert galaxies imply that there must be type 2 counterparts of NLS1 galaxies i.e...

Testing Radiation Pressure Corrections to Reverberation Mapping Masses

Multi-epoch reverberation mapping of the Seyfert galaxy, NGC 5548, suggests that radiation pressure is not strongly biasing the black hole (BH) masses derived for active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The model proposed by Marconi et al. to account for radiation pressure in BH mass estimates fails to explain the observations of NGC 5548, the only AGN with reverberation campaigns spanning a sufficientl...

DYNAMICS OF BROAD EMISSION-LINE REGION IN NGC 5548: HYDROMAGNETIC WIND MODEL versus OBSERVATIONS

We analyze the results of long-term observations of broad-line region (BLR) in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 and provide a critical comparison with the predictions of a hydromagnetically-driven outflow model of Emmering, Blandford and Shlosman. We use this model to generate a time series of C IV line profiles that have responded to a time varying continuum. Our modifications to the model includ...

Evidence for Supermassive Black Holes in Active Galactic Nuclei from Emission-Line Reverberation

Enission-line variability data for Seyfert 1 galaxies provide strong evidence for the existence of supermassive black holes in the nuclei of these galaxies, and that the line-emitting gas is moving in the gravitational potential of that black hole. The time-delayed response of the emission lines to continuum variations is used to infer the size of the line-emitting region, which is then combine...
